43 Diagnosed with a TA Grade 2

Hi My name is Todd and I am 43 years old.  I was Diagnosed with Bladder Cancer December of 2005.
I had a Stage TA Superficial Non Invasive but was a Grade 2.  This was removed and I then went through 6 weeks of BCG treatments. I was lucky that I did not have any side affects from the BCG besides a little Burning when urinating after 2 hours.
March 6 I went in for my 1st 3 month check up and the DR found a little growth which he biopsied part of and burned off the rest.  The Pathology report came back and it was benign not cancer.
So that is good, but I am still trying to get used to the Idea that I have/had/living with Cancer.  I have another 3 monther in June.

June 6 went in for check up and Dr said that I had no tumors.  Boy, was I nervous going in for that Cystoscopy.  Every time I feel a ping or a pang in my bladder area it sacres the heck out of me.  Have an office visit in three weeks for follow up, and then my next three monther is in September.

June 9. I have not smoked a Cigarette in 6 months. Hurray.   :) Still miss it sometimes, but I rather be healthy. :D

October 3 2006 went in for next next Cystoscopy. Another Fun Day.  Dr Said that I had no visible Tumors, but did notice some red irritation, so he took a Biopsy.
October 19 2006. Went for the Results and all is good. Biopsy came back no 'C'. I have my next poke and see in January.

1/9/2007 Went in for my 3 monther.  Dr said No tumors and all looks good. Going to have an appointment with Dr in 3 weeks.  Will update further.

1/25/2007 Went in For Follow Up Post Procedure Check up.  Dr said the Cysto was good.  I was clean and clear. My next next Cysto will be in 3 to 4 months. Will update again then.

5/15/2007 Went in for my 3 to 4 month Cysto.  Doc said that he found a small Papilloma.  Told me it was small and he burned it off.  I asked if he took a Biopsy and he said that there really wasn't a need.  He said it was obvious what it was.  I asked if he meant Benign and he said yup. He also said that we will continue with the 3 month check ups.  I always found it kind of crazy that after the Cysto I am still pretty much out of it when the Dr tells me what he finds, be it good or bad.  I always seem to forget half of what he says.  I will be making a 2 week post op appointment to check with him and update later.

And of course, I have been searching the Web for what a Papilloma is. I think its a Benign Polyp, or the start of a new Tumor.   Anyone know what that is? Should I be concerned that its starting again, or happy that it was found and zapped before it starts up again

A bit of good actually Great news.  2/8/2007 My wife and I had our First Child a 8lb 2oz baby boy names Andrew James.

5/29/2007 Went in for my 2 week post Cysto chat with the Doc.  He said that he found a small polyp which he burned off, no Biopsy.  Doc said, it was obviously a polyp.  Said he was surprised that he found anything, considering I was doing so well.  I asked him if it was a benign thingamajig, he said that anytime he finds a Polyp in the bladder, he is not happy, wether it was benign or not.  Says that it is  something that should not be there. (Mr sunshine).  He also said I should not worry and he also said we will keep to the 3-4 month Cysto schedule.  All and all not too bad I guess/think.  I will update again after my next cysto in or around Aug- Sep.

9/24/2007 Well its been four months or so and I go in for my next procesdure tomorrow. Wish me luck. I will update in the next couple of days.
9/25/2007 I had a 12:45 pm procedure. Some Good news! The Doc said I did not have any polyps or Tumors.  I have a Post Op appointment in Three Weeks.  Hurray!!
10/25/2007 Had my Post check up and the Doc said that all was good.  No Tumors, no blood in urine, everthing looks good. doc says he wants to keep to the 4 month schedule, so I will have my next Cysto at the end of January.

01/29/2008 Had my 4 month Cysto, No Visible tumors or Polyps. Dr said saw some redness that he took a sample of.  Have a Post Appointment in 2 weeks, will update then.

2/14/2008 Good News, Had the 2 week post exam.  All is good. Dr has put my exams at the 6 month schedule.

Hey Todd,
I'm 47, and was diagnosed in Dec 2005 too. I have superficial, TA, but Grade 0.  They removed a really big tumor, and I have my first check up next month.  No BCG treatment the first time.  I'm a little weirded out, myself - do I still have cancer, or am I in "remission". Am I "living with cancer", or do I talk about it in the past?  the fact that this type comes back 80% of the time makes me wonder how I am supposed to feel about it, too.

We are so much luckier than many on this website; yet I think we still have to be conscious of the fact that we have to watch over ourselves and do our best to prevent a recurrence, just like anyone with a worse prognosis.  My funny little Indian doctor said to me, after the pathology report came back "Well if I HAD to get cancer, this is the kind I'd want to have myself"... not sure I'm looking forward to cystoscopies every 3-6 months for the rest of my life, but I still think he's right - the alternatives are much worse.

Be strong, remain fearless
Lauren
