Hi

Went for my 2nd BCG instillation on Wednesday, with no problems.  Discussed my side effects with my doctor. (Chills after 24 hours and minute blood spot on the Tuesday - 6 days after instillation). He said that side effects indicate that the medication is working. (Horay for side effects)

This time however my side effects began about 2 hours after receiving the BCG - Chills and fever (flu like) and the most agonising burn upon urination (only the first 2 times). Also had some hermaturia.  By Thursday midday I was fine. Would like to hear from anyone that has had the same side effects. (Keen to reasure myself that this is normal - it does list these side effects on the pamphlet that comes with the bcg vials

Hello Wendy,

BCG side effects can be progressive. During my first six treatments I only had flu like symptoms immediately after the first three which passed within 24 hours. However, within 2 hours after the fourth treatment, I had stronger flu like symptoms and blood and clots in my urine that lasted for approximately 6 hours. I informed the doctor and my dosage was reduced to 1/3 dose. The final two treatments had blood and clots but not as extensive. My three maintenance treatments (3 months later) also had blood and small clots which lasted approximately 6 hours but again, not as extensive.

Yes, it does indicated that the BCG is doing it's job and that it is normal but hard to convince yourself as it is happening.
