My bladder cancer battle

Posted by: Mike A in bladder cancer on Print PDF

Well, I am very much underway with the radiation and chemo treatments.  Radiation  15 minutes a day, 5 days a week at 7 AM, and Chemo one day a week,  for 5 hours. (Cysplatin)

I have been told that I'm a T2,  with a possibility of T3, and  am being treated as if nodal involvement is negative.  Tomotherapy, the name of the clinic, and apparently one of only 100  of these new radiation machines in existence in the US.   Among the advances of this  unit is its ability to read where it is going while it administers the rays.  The bladder apparrently is a moving target .

So far no  side effects at all from radiation, to be expected I'm told.   And the Chemo is not as bad as the heavy doses I've taken before.

Anyway just thought I'd share

Ok, I understand things better now, Mike and agree with the paths. I thought you had a superficial, non -invasive tumor of Ta or T1. T2 or 3 calls for the guns you're under now. Sounds like you're getting the best bladder sparing treatment out there. I'm sure your doctors know all about Shipley and Company in Boston, who have spear headed that approach in the U.S. We have a page here:

Much luck with this treatment! And thanks for the update.

Sometimes I realise how lucky I am when I read some of the stories in this forum. I trust things are proceeding smoothly Mike and you are not suffering too much at the hands of your treatment.

Thanks for your kind thoughts Jeff.  So far this regiment is a piece of cake compared to the heavy chemo I went through a few months ago.

My radiologists are quite familiar with Dr. Shipley, the radiation machine being used is state of the art, and I do believe I'm under the best of care.

I expressed my concern that I should have been turbt again prior to starting the radiation in order to give this treatment it's best shot.  My fear was that unless this treatment produced a complete recovery, the doctors would recommend surgery, and it is unlikely to have a CR when you present with a bladder full, as I have.

The doctors assured me they are committed to this bladder saving modality, if at all feasible, but no one knows how the cancer will react, and we'll just have to wait and see.

another 2 or weeks.

Hi Mike

They didn't do a TUR before beginning radiation? That's weird, is it a new protocol, using radiation as ablation therapy? New one to me. It could work though.

Here's hoping- with all our hearts!- that things are good in two weeks.
Best to you,
Wendy
