My story of Bladder Cancer

Posted by: Rosemary in bladder cancer on Print PDF

It seems that my bladder likes these BCG treatments less and less. :-/

I'm 3 hours into my 2nd treatment, 2nd round, and I'm very uncomfortable with lots of bleeding.
I've peed every 5 minutes for an hour and it burns like razor blades.

I may feel a little bit of lessening off as I sit here.  I'm trying to drink lots of water to flush myself out.

It wasn't like this with the first few treatments.

My Mom says that maybe it means that it's working.

It would be nice to know that these treatments are really worth going through.
I guess we have to trust the experts on that. :-X

Hi Rosemary,

You're into your second round of six? when did you complete the first round? If you continue with these irritative side effects you should postpone the next treatment.

There is a bit of a controversy in the field about whether to do a 2nd round of six tx's or to do maintenance, which is a second round of only three treatments, then wait 3 months, continuing with 3 BCG tx's per time, for a period of some years. But many experts agree that BCG can overload the immune system when given more than the 6+3 at a time, and actually be less effective because of the immune system overload.

Dr. Lamm's protocol (he's the 'king' of the whole maintenance theory) is here:

Think about this before having another treatment, and please make sure you have no more symptoms before getting it.

Thanks for the reply, Wendy.

Sorry, I was confusing in my post. I've finished my 3 month 6x and am currently having my 6 month 3x.  (I guess that's called maintenance).

I had a LOT of bleeding yesterday.  I discussed it with my new Dr's nurse (whom I've never met)
and she was concerned.  We both thought it might have been trauma from the catheter.
It did HURT this time, and it never hurt before.

So, I am to go in, have a urine check and then discuss the treatment.  The UNC doctor told me in the beginning when prescribing the protocol for my BCG treatments, that if I was too miserable, I could cut my dosage.

I may be leaning on his words (and yours) during my next week visit for BCG.

Thanks a bunch!!!
