Question?

Hi Everyone, this is Sandy, and I have a question.  Has any of you filed for SSI after being diagnoised with BC?  I have no health insurance plus the fact that I have been very weak since  BCG.  Please let me know your circumstances.  Thank you

Sandy there are 2 parts for SSI. I know I was declined for one part based on my husbands income. I am still waiting to hear about the disability part. From what I have been told and from past experience with my son you are normally denied and have to appeal. You have to be disabled for atleast 5 months and per what I have been reading. They don't consider Bladder Cancer a disability??? Good Luck

Hello: As sharond noted, SSI is part of Social Security's disability program. My husband did receive Social Security disability for his bladder cancer. He applied 6 months after being home from work and was approved for benefits within three weeks; he applied online and I did have to mail in his birth certificate (a certified copy, not a xerox), but the rest was handled through email and the US Mail.
His cancer was metastic and he had a neobladder. It is most important to have your condition documented by your doctor, so keep regular appointments and if you are planning to apply, then be sure to acquire a copy of your birth certificate. Your children under 18 are also eligible for benefits when you receive them.
