What Are My Treatment Options?

I am a 53 year old female. Very healthy and very fit. I was diagnosed with upper tract bladder cancer in late March 2007 and had a nephrouterectomy a few weeks later in mid-April 2007. The kidney mass was 6 cm, Grade III, with some spread into the adjacent uterter. I was "all-clear" until my one year check-up, when "spots" were discovered in my bladder. Since then I have had an office visit procedure at 15 months with a cysto/fulgration/electrocautery with two small tumors removed, and an outpatient surgery at 18 months with a cysto/fulgration/laser with two more apparently larger tumors removed, one in the urethra. The second surgery came back with a pathology report of Grade III, non-invasive. My suregeon doesn't seem inclinded to do BCG treatments yet. Does this sound right? I don't want to wait until the inevtiable, i.e. spread to invasive, or worse. No where in my medical records is the "Stage" listed. Please help.

your case sounds very similar to my husbands. He had kidney/ureter removed August 2005 and they started finding bladder tumors in 2006. Long story, ended up having a "stump" of ureter left from laproscopic nephrectomy that they think may have been "seeding" the bladder tumors. He has done BCG since summer of 2006 and has had no new tumors. Next round of BCG starts tomorrow. From everything I have researched, I'd ask why they don't think BCG necessary. If it gets to invasive, as far as I understand, it's too late for BCG.

Good luck!

Hi SHernor,
Thanks for the input. I see my surgeon again in about a month.

Hi Susan,
Sorry to hear of your situation. I have found that fear and worry can be very paralizing, so I try hard to put it this out of my mind. However, believe me, I know its difficult. I was pretty well recovered from my nephrouterectomy after about 10 - 12 weeks, regarding my activity level; lingering surgical pain lasted for another 9 months or so. Best of luck in your treatment(s).

Hey Gal, It is all terrifing. My BC is not as serious as yours, so far, but I have already had six weeks of BCG. I was very sick during the process of BCG, but it was very successful for me. I was full of tumors and the BCG took care of them. It has not eleminated the new ones but we are keeping them under control every three months. I will pray for you and I would certainly recommend another opinion. Good luck and keep me posted please.
