Incomplete at this time
I am a 47 year old male. I have been a research biologist working with wildlife and wildlife diseases for about 20 years so i should know better than what I have done to date. As far as I can tell I really don’t fit any “risk groups” which from my readings doesn’t mean much, not a smoker (bit of grass when younger)no dyes or such but maybe a lot of formalin when I was younger from my lab work. I have been looking through this site and others for the last couple of weeks. I recently (2 weeks ago) got a surprise christmas present in the form of a suspicion of Bladder cancer. I have never had blood in my urine that I have seen but over the last two years I have had increasing difficulty urinating, burning, weak stream etc. I also in February had to have a bowel resection (no fun). After it I could no longer dismiss the urological issues since I now had a lot of pain so I made the appointment with the urologist I am presently using. More on him in a minute but went to him in June 2002 and he seemed to be treating me with drugs for prostate enlargement. I say seemed because the guy was 3 1/2 hours late showing up for his appointment with me and basically rushed to get me out. Gave me a prescription and ran some blood tests, no urinalysis. My fault though as I knew in the back of my mind he should have but I was dying to get out of there, embarrassment (I know it is stupid) and also spent enough time sitting around. Scheduled to go back to him in Sept 2002 and did so. Again got rushed through but this time I pushed a little and medication got changed for treating the prostate issue. Also had a sonigram to look at voiding ability. Found that I wasn’t voiding very well (no shit could have told him that) but he said the med I was to take for the next few months should do it. Next appointment Dec 16 2002. Went to this one, Guess what the guy isn’t even there yet and “will be running a bit late, do I want to wait?” Well I guess something in me said maybe I had better wait. He shows up an hour late and I eventually get in. Again the rush but this time I have a few specific questions. I ask about the pain in a testicle and what is the story with this. He says that sometimes this is part of prostatic syndromes (first time he tells me this). then he starts to tell me that the meds aren’t doing it and I really should consider either a knfing or laser job on the prostate (called it a roto roter-like job.) Then he asks me to go pee and come back for the sonigram scan to see how voinding is going. Well this time big and bright on the scan is a lesion extenting into the bladder cavity. He gives me some comment that “well it might be a fold in the bladder but doesn’t look like it. Also sas last urine had micro-hematuria. Then tells me it is important to come in for a cysto. Now scheduled for Jan 16. Looking at the scan I am not happy but hoping for the fold theory. As a researcher I have started looking and learning and I can’t say how great this stite is. Been to the ACS and other similar sites and you get the usual white-bread type of info. He I am finding what i certainly wanted to know. I didn’t tell my wife about this right away as I needed to go over it for myself. Also haven’t said anything to anyone else yet until we really know what is or what isn’t. But I have learned a lot and hope for a negative viewing (meaning nothing to see) I wish you all luck and would be happy to hear form any as I am figuring I will probably have to deal with this and have all the same fears many of you have had. i hope I can learn from everyone else. I hope you all have a good new year.
